Employment Discrimination or Housing/Public Accommodation or Other

Vermont and federal law prohibit employment, housing or public accommodation discrimination or retaliation based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability. Vermont law also prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation, martial status, minor children, receipt of public assistance, HIV status, place of birth, and age over 18. It is also unlawful to retaliate or discriminate against individuals that have alleged discrimination.

Issue: Employment Discrimination

Vermont and federal law prohibit employment discrimination or retaliation based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability. Vermont law also prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation, HIV status, place of birth, and age over 18. It is also unlawful to retaliate or discriminate against employees or applicants that have alleged employment discrimination. Employees or applicants for employment (other than with the State of Vermont) can file discrimination claims with the Civil Rights Unit. under state law, or under both state and federal law.

    Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 42 U. S. C. § 2000 et seq.
    Americans with Disabilities Act, 42 U.S.C. § 12111 et seq.
    Age Discrimination in Employment Act, 29 U.S.C. § 621 et seq.
    Equal Pay Act, 29 U.S.C. §206(d).

    Issue: Housing and Public Accommodation

    It is illegal to discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age (starting at 18 and over), mental or physical disability, sexual orientation, marital status, HIV status, place of birth, minor children or receipt of public assistance in housing and public accommodations.

    A place of public accommodation is an establishment such as a hotel, restaurant, school, office or store that offers facilities, goods or services to the general public.
