AMES LABORATORY WINS THREE FLC AWARDS

Awards presented at regional meeting in Monterey, CA

AMES, Iowa – Three members of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory received awards from the Federal Laboratory Consortium at the organization’s Mid-Continent Regional September meeting in Monterey, CA.

Receiving the award for Distinguished Service was George Kraus, Ames Laboratory assistant director for Bio-related Initiatives and director of the Lab’s Biorenewable Resources Consortium. Over the past two years, the BRC initiated 11 agreements with universities and industry for technologies related to using agricultural commodities as energy sources and chemical feedstocks. Dr. Kraus is also professor of chemistry at Iowa State University, where he is the director of the university’s Center for Catalysis.

Receiving the award for Outstanding Technology Development was Victor Lin, Ames Laboratory associate scientist and associate professor of chemistry at Iowa State. Lin’s award was for pioneering work in developing catalysts that speed the production of bio-diesel fuels.

Also receiving an award was Deb Covey, Ames Laboratory manager of the Office of Industrial Outreach and Technology Administration. Her award was for Outstanding Laboratory Representative.

“Each of these outstanding individuals is to be commended for their meritorious service to the Ames Lab and the nation. Ames has from the beginning been a strong supporter of the FLC and its efforts to find commercial homes for the technology developed in the federal laboratories,” said Tom Barton, Ames Laboratory director.

The Federal Laboratory Consortium is comprised of technology transfer offices of all the federal laboratories throughout the country. The FLC has more than 700 members. The FLC creates an environment that adds value to and supports the technology transfer efforts of its members and potential partners. A key element of the FLC is its effort to bring federal laboratories together with potential users of government-developed technologies.

Ames Laboratory is operated for the Department of Energy by Iowa State University. The Lab conducts research into various areas of national concern, including energy resources, high-speed computer design, environmental cleanup and restoration, and the synthesis and study of new materials.
