Jennifer Archibeque: From Roots to Reporter in the Americas

Jennifer Archibeque's parents were born in New Mexico and learned Spanish as their first language. When her mom and dad entered public school, assimilation into Anglo society was such a priority that their Hispanic classmates were sometimes hit by teachers for speaking Spanish.

Today, students like Jennifer are reconnecting with their linguistic heritage. Instead of being punished, they are rewarded with increased opportunities when they master their parents' native tongue. That's why Jennifer Archibeque went to Colombia to hone her language skills.

As far back as she can remember, Jennifer Archibeque has loved to write. Her parents, both avid readers, passed on their belief in the magical power of language and the importance of education.
