University Research Centers

The NASA University Research Centers, or URCs, project is designed to achieve a broad-based, competitive aerospace research capability among the nation's minority institutions, or MIs, that will:

--Foster new aerospace science and technology concepts.
--Expand the nation's base for aerospace research and development.
--Develop mechanisms for increased participation by faculty and students of MIs in mainstream research.
--Increase the production of socially and economically disadvantaged students.

Participants must be U.S. citizens who have historically been underrepresented and who have earned an advanced degree in a NASA-related field.

The URCs are multidisciplinary research units established at minority institutions to focus on a specific area of NASA interest. Currently, NASA supports URCs at 11 Historically Black Colleges or Universities, also known as HBCUs, and three Other Minority Universities, or OMUs.

NASA Group 4 University Research Centers Awardees Announced

The NASA Office of Education announced Sept. 9, the awarding of research grants totaling nearly $35 million to seven minority institutions.

These awards are made under the NASA Group 4 University Research Center Awards program. The NASA Group 4 awards provide funding that will continue NASA’s commitment of achieving a broad based, competitive aerospace research and technology development capability among the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Other Minority Universities.
