Heroes to Hometowns is designed to welcome home Service Members who, because of injuries sustained, can no longer serve in the military.

The American public's strong support for our troops is especially evident in their willingness to help Service members who are severely injured in the war, and their ever-supportive families, as they transition from the hospital environment and return to civilian life.  Heroes to Hometowns is a program that focuses on reintegration back home, with networks established at the national and state levels to better identify the extraordinary needs of returning families before they return home and to work with local communities to coordinate government and non-government resources necessary for long term success.

State Heroes to Hometowns Committees are the link among the military Services and Veteran's Affairs case workers at the military and VA hospitals, the severely injured member, their families, and their local community. Support has included:

• help with paying the bills
• finding suitable homes and adapting as needed
• adapting vehicles
• transportation to medical appointments
• finding jobs and providing educational assistance
• child care support
• arranging welcome home celebrations
• help working through bureaucracy and obtaining government benefits and entitlements
• sports and recreation opportunities
• holiday dinners

• University of Phoenix Severely Injured Veterans Scholarship Fund - University of Phoenix has created a scholarship program to honor Arizona's brave men and women who return home from service in Iraq and Afghanistan with severe injuries.

STATE HEROES TO HOMETOWNS COMMITTEES

There are three charter members on each State Heroes to Hometowns committees, each uniquely able to contribute to overall support with the ability to tap into their national, state, and local support systems to provide essential links to government, corporate, and non-profit resources at all levels and to garner the all important hometown support.

• The American Legion State Adjutants.
  The American Legion is a large non-profit veteran service organization that with their 55 State organizations and 15,000 American Legion posts worldwide have committed to support the needs of military personnel who are severely injured as they prepare to return to local communities.  Contact the American Legion Heroes to Hometowns Program Director at 703-908-6250 or 1-888-774-1361 or email or click on the State Heroes to Hometowns Committees link for your American Legion State Adjutant's contact information.

• The State Directors of Veteran's Affairs.
  They are the top VA officials in each State and Territory.  Through a partnership with the National Association of the State Directors of Veterans Affairs (NASDVA) a non profit to which each Director is a member, they have committed to keep local communities informed when they hear if someone from their community has been severely injured and prior to the member/family member returning home from the hospital, they will assess local and state resources and help communities coordinate support as needed. • State Family Program Directors.
  The National Guard Joint Force Headquarters' State Family Program offices support all active duty, guard and reserve personnel within their area of responsibility.  Through their regional Family Readiness Groups they will assist in the transition from DoD to the VA and from active duty status to becoming a productive member of the community.    Click on the State Heroes to Hometowns Committees link to contact the State Family Program Director.
