President Bush signing the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990

The Center for Independent Living of Middle Tennessee provides persons with disabilities opportunities to be self advocates and make their own decisions regarding living arrangements, means of transportation, employment, social and recreational activities, as well as other aspects of everyday life.

Independent living for someone with a disability is having the opportunity to live and make decisions about ones own life to the greatest extent possible. It is important for people with disabilities to have the opportunity to be as independent as they can given their particular circumstances and abilities. While it is true that people with disabilities may need accommodations at times so do people without disabilities. It is important to remember that everyone needs assistance at times, and that people with disabilities only want the opportunity to live their ordinary lives just like everyone else.
