NINTH ANNUAL AMES LAB/ISU SCIENCE BOWL WILL TAKE PLACE JAN. 30

Valley High School, winner of last year's National Science Bowl, will defend regional title

AMES, Iowa -- Valley High School of West Des Moines will take the first step in defending its national title when it competes Jan. 30 in the regional Science Bowl sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory and Iowa State University.

The ninth annual Ames Lab/ISU Science Bowl begins at 8:30 a.m. in the ISU Memorial Union. The 40 participating schools will each send a team of up to five students to the fast-paced, daylong competition to answer questions from a broad range of science and math topics.

The Ames Lab/ISU Science Bowl is one of 53 regional Department of Energy competitions throughout the nation. Regional champions advance to DOE's National Science Bowl April 30- May 3 in Chevy Chase, Md.

Valley High School won the 1998 National Science Bowl after winning last year's Ames Lab/ISU Science Bowl. The team received an all-expenses-paid trip to Lindau, Germany, where they met with Nobel Prize winners in chemistry. All of the members of last year's national championship team have graduated, so a new group of students will defend Valley's title.

"It felt great to win the National Science Bowl because we had spent so much time practicing and preparing for it," said Drew Volker, a member of Valley's championship team who is now an ISU freshman in pre-chemical engineering. "It was nice to see our efforts pay off."

Volker has volunteered to serve as a timekeeper for this year's regional competition along with 70 other Ames Laboratory and ISU employees who will act as moderators, judges, scorekeepers and timekeepers.

Steve Karsjen, coordinator of the Ames Lab/ISU Science Bowl, said the competition draws some of the brightest students from all corners of the state. "This is an excellent way to reward students who work hard on developing their math and science skills," Karsjen said.

This year's National Science Bowl winners will participate in the 30th International Science School for high school students July 5-16 at the University of Sydney in Australia.

Nationwide, more than 9,000 students from 1,800 schools will participate in Science Bowl competitions this year.
