Program Purpose:

In a world where the physically challenged have limited access to the everyday activities most take for granted, involvement in the exhilarating challenge of sports may seem impossible. Access for Athletes’ purpose is to shift the paradigm, by providing resources for adaptive sports equipment, sports prosthetics, training, and competition grants so that those with physical challenges can once again — or for the first time — participate in sports.

Program Goals:

CAF’s primary goal is to increase the physical activity levels for physically challenged individuals. This is accomplished by:

  • Providing adaptive sports equipment
  • Providing sports prosthetics
  • Providing grants for competition and training expenses
  • Funding recreational as well as competitive and elite athletes

Accomplishing this goal will in turn lead the challenged athlete to experience:

  • An increase in independence
  • An increase in self-esteem
  • An increased sense of worth
  • A sense of accomplishment

Program Description:

Access for Athletes bridges the gap between physical rehabilitation and a return to an active lifestyle. Stepping in where medical treatment, rehabilitation and health insurance ends, Access for Athletes provides such equipment as adaptive sports wheelchairs, handcycles, and mono skis. After being awarded grants for new adaptive sports equipment, prosthetics and/or training and competition expenses, participants in the program can pursue a full and active life that includes sports. CAF believes this not only increases their physical fitness and activity levels for program participants, but also enhances their confidence and self-esteem.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for a grant through Access for Athletes, an athlete’s disability must be recognized within the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) classifications. For more information, please visit the IPC website at: http://www.paralympic.org/release/Main_Sections_Menu/index.html. CAF does not discriminate based on age, gender, level of ability or sport, but does require applicants to demonstrate a financial need.
