Basic Standards and Calibrations
The Resonance Ionizing Mass Spectrometry (RIMS) consists of a glow-discharge source, a laser ionization step and a magnetic sector mass spectrometer (MS). The objective is to be able to incorporate natural materials into a pellet which provides neutral atoms in the glow discharge, which are then selectively ionized using either a pulsed or continuous wave laser. The ions are then selected in the MS. The principle has been proven at this time for obtaining mass fractions of radioactive substances by direct compositional analysis.
