AMES LABORATORY CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY

Ames Laboratory will celebrate its 50th anniversary on May 16. A reception will be held from 2-4 p.m. in front of the new Technical and Administrative Services Facility (TASF), located behind Spedding Hall on Pammel Drive.

As part of the celebration, at 2 p.m. the Laboratory will unveil its historical display. The display highlights the contributions Ames Lab scientists made to the Manhattan Project, which resulted in the formation of the Ames Laboratory.

On May 17, 1947, the newly established United States Atomic Energy Commission formally announced the location of one of its national research laboratories at Ames, to be known as the Ames Laboratory. Its purpose was to build and maintain a strong group of scientists working in the fundamental sciences. Since then, many significant developments have resulted from the Ames Laboratory research, and it's now one of the world's foremost materials research centers.

Ames Laboratory is operated for the Department of Energy by Iowa State University. The Lab conducts research into various areas of national concern, including energy resources, high-performance computing, environmental cleanup and restoration, and synthesis and study of new materials.
