ROCKWELL COLLINS AND DOW CORNING FOUNDATION CONTRIBUTE TO AMES LAB/ISU SCIENCE BOWL

Companies provide ongoing support for science education program

AMES, Iowa –Rockwell Collins and the Dow Corning Foundation are the latest to contribute to the Ames Laboratory/Iowa State University Science Bowl.  Bruce Harmon, deputy director of the Ames Lab, acknowledged the contributions in a check-presentation ceremony on Nov. 2.

Harmon praised Rockwell Collins for seeing the value in the Science Bowl early on.  The company has donated to the Science Bowl since 1999.  Its 2007 contribution was $2,000.

“We want to thank Rockwell Collins for helping us inspire and recruit the next generation of scientists and engineers,” said Harmon, who expressed his thanks to Nan Mattai, senior vice president for Engineering and Technology for Rockwell Collins.

The Ames Laboratory/Iowa State University High School Science Bowl has been in existence since 1991.  The program was expanded in 2004 to include a competition for middle school students.  To date, more than 3,000 high school and middle school students from more than 145 Iowa schools across Iowa have participated in Science Bowl.  The Science Bowl is a rapid-fire, daylong competition in which students answer questions from a wide range of science and math disciplines. The winning team from each competition receives an all-expenses-paid trip to the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl.  The 2008 High School Science Bowl will be held on Jan. 26.  The Middle School Science Bowl, a two-day event, will be held Apr. 18-19.  The Middle School Science Bowl includes both a hydrogen fuel-cell car race and an academic competition.  Both events are held at Iowa State.

The Dow Corning Foundation was also recognized for its contribution to the Science Bowl.  The Foundation presented a check for $1,000 to Harmon as part of its five-year commitment to the Science Bowl.

“2007 marked the third year of the Dow Corning Foundation’s commitment, and we want to express our thanks to Dow Corning and James White,” said Harmon.  White is Dow Corning’s director of business development for the Engineered Elastomers Business Unit.

Ames Laboratory, celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2007, is operated for the Department of Energy by Iowa State University. The Lab conducts research into various areas of national concern, including the synthesis and study of new materials, energy resources, high-speed computer design, and environmental cleanup and restoration.
