  1. What's the entry-level salary for an LE Staff member?

The entry-level salary is based upon the LE Staff grade of the position the employee is selected to encumber, as specified on the local compensation plan. US Missions compensate LE Staff based upon prevailing practice in-country. LE Staff are paid in host country currency unless local prevailing practice is to compensate all LE Staff in US dollars.

  2. If selected for a locally recruited position at an overseas post, will the USG pay for my family and me to get to post?

No. If selected for a locally recruited position at an overseas post, you are responsible for the travel and all costs associated with the relocation to the city and country of hire.

  3. Are US Veterans given hiring preference?

US Citizen Eligible Family Members and US Veterans who are fully qualified for a position receive an official preference in hiring under the LE Staff Recruitment policy. The preference does not use a point system, but operates under the concept of "affirmative factor," or a preference in employment when all things are equal.

  4. Does the Locally Employed Staff recruitment policy consider lesbians and gays for employment? What if I have a live-in partner?

It is the policy of the Department of State to provide equal opportunity and equitable treatment in employment to all persons without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, handicap, political affiliation, marital status, or sexual orientation.
