COMMEMORATION OF 1902 GLIDERS TO BE HELD AT WRIGHT BROTHERS NATIONAL MEMORIAL
Two-day program to be held October 10- 11 at First Flight Centennial Pavilion

Kill Devil Hills, NC
October 7, 2003

As part of the First Flight Centennial Celebration's yearlong events, a two-day program will be held at Wright Brothers National Memorial later this week to commemorate the Wright brothers' 1902 gliders and their importance in aviation history.

With their 1902 glider, the Wright brothers made the first controlled flights off the sand dunes in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Through these flights, they were able to perfect the roll, pitch and yaw control system for the 1903 Flyer, the same control system that is used in aircraft today.

The Wright brothers' achievements with the 1902 glider will be celebrated through a series of exhibits and illustrated talks to be held at the First Flight Centennial Pavilion at Wright Brothers National Memorial on October 10 and 11.

Mr. Ball's talk will cover the Wright brothers' significant gliding flights, Orville's contributions to the international body supporting sport aviation, and a brief chronology of gliding growth in the U.S. and abroad over the past 100 years.
