The Regional Climate System Model

The Regional Climate System Model (RCSM) consists of a pre-processor (input data), process models, and post processors (output data analysis, visualizations, assessments).

The RCSM uses large-scale atmospheric data (GCMs, analysis, and observations) as input to produce regional-scale and river basin-scale output. Downscaling utilizes process models and statistical distributions.

Downscaled global climate information can give insights to processes that occur at the regional and local scales.

Coupling models for understanding climate response at a range of scales, from global climate (100�0 km) to hydrologic basin-scales and scales of human impact (1�0 m), is a complicated task.

The Regional Climate System Model Application Domains


The East Asia research is a collaboration with scientists from China (Ministry of Water Resources) and Korea (METRI/Korean Meteorological Administration). It is currently being applied to East Asia as part of a project to under- stand water resources and sustain-ablity in this fast-developing region.

The Northeast Australian research is in collaboration with the University of Queensland and the Australian Dept. of Natural Resources. This research focuses on downscaled climate response at the watershed scale.

The Southwestern U.S. hydroclimate research consists of:

1) 48-hour precipitation and streamflow prediction experiments,

2) experimental seasonal forecasts,

3) downscaled atmospheric 2xCO2 climate projections and 4) analysis. Our Southwest U.S. research is in collaboration with a number of University of California institutions (Berkeley, Davis, Los Angeles, and San Diego), University of Arizona, NASA and the National Weather Service.
