State Parole Violators No Longer Housed At MDC
Bernalillo County and the New Mexico Department of Corrections have reached an agreement regarding housing of technical parole violators.

“Technical parole violators will no longer be housed at the Metropolitan Detention Center,” says Commission Chair Alan B. Armijo. “We have worked out the details of an agreement and the Corrections Department will be using a facility in Los Lunas to house these individuals. If a parole violator is booked after 5:00 pm, they will be temporarily held at the MDC until the following morning,” says Commissioner Armijo. “In addition, Sheriff’s deputies will no longer be responsible for transporting Department of Correction’s inmates from prisons around the state who were previously brought to the MDC and held there for various court appearances.”

“This is one more step in our efforts to manage overcrowding at the MDC,” says Commissioner Armijo. “We estimate that this agreement will decrease our daily head count by an average of 50 inmates per day and frees up areas that were used for segregation, allowing for greater staff safety.”

The average daily population at the MDC over the past several months has been approximately 2500 individuals. The facility was built to house 2236 individuals.

Along with this measure, Bernalillo County officials continue their efforts to decrease the daily population by expanding the Community Custody Program, offering substance abuse treatment programs through MATS and continue to work with Judges, the DA and law enforcement officials.
