ACA Auditors Declare Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center One Of The Best Jails In The Country
ACA accreditation is considered the Gold Standard in the field of Corrections.
BCMDC is proud to announce it has achieved accreditation from the American Corrections Association (ACA). ACA accreditation is considered the Gold Standard in the field of Corrections.

ACA auditors today completed their three day, round the clock evaluation of the jail. The audit includes an in-depth look at training, safety standards, enforcement of rules and regulations, and adhering to the best policies and practices. Special attention was given to MDC’s onsite Health Services Unit and delivery of health care and psychiatric services to inmates.

Auditors interviewed staff as well as inmates, ate meals served to the general inmate population and toured the entire facility. They also demanded records and full documentation from every department.

Audit Committee Chairman, Douglas Sproat, stated “When anyone asks me about outstanding jails, I will tell them that the BCMDC is the model to follow.” He also stated that the taxpayers of Bernalillo County can be assured that their money is being well spent.

John Dantis, Deputy County Manager for Public Safety, says “Bernalillo County has been working towards ACA Accreditation since the day the County took control of the BCMDC. “It proves that our commitment to running a safe, well managed and efficient operation has been realized. ACA sets the standards, BCMDC is carrying them out.”
Corrections Chief Ronald Torres states, “We are honored to be considered within the top 2% of large jails in the United States. I want to thank the entire staff for their tireless effort to pass this grueling audit with flying colors. The people who run this jail 24/7 have proven their ability to run one of the best jails in the country despite our challenges. I know how hard they work; now the public will know their dedication to safety and excellence.”

Becoming accredited is voluntary and one of the first goals of County officials including Chief Ronald Torres, Deputy County Manager John Dantis, and County Manager Thaddeus Lucero when Bernalillo County took sole control of the MDC.
