Across the nation, there is a high degree of concern about the current state and future direction of the workforce for preventing and treating mental health and substance use disorders. Despite these concerns, the many dedicated members of the current “behavioral health” workforce, and the pockets of innovative training, recruitment and retention activities that are beginning to emerge, are reasons for optimism that together we can build more comprehensive and systemic solutions to present workforce dilemmas. In this regard, SAMHSA is making available several important working documents that can inform and shape future discussions and actions in the workforce development area.
