core - a tube of sediment that has been removed from the ground
dike - a barrier constructed to contain the flow or water
ecosystem - a system formed by the interaction of a community of animals with their environment
endangered - in immediate danger of extinction; "an endangered species"
environment - the area in which something exists or lives
Everglades - a large subtropical swamp in southern Florida that is noted for its wildlife
Everglades Drainage District - a region where all of the water eventually flows into the Everglades
extinct - no longer in existence; lost or especially having died out leaving no living representatives; "an extinct species of fish"
foraminifera - an amoeba-like animal which grows a shell (very tiny)
habitat - the type of environment in which an organism or group of organisms normally lives: "a marine habitat"
mollusk - an invertebrate (a class of organisms have no spine or backbone) having a soft unsegmented body usually enclosed in a shell (clams, snails, and octopuses are examples)
nutrient - any substance which nourishes or promotes growth
organism - a living body, either vegetable or animal, made up of different organs or parts with functions which are separate, but mutually dependent, and essential to the life of the individual
ostracode - tiny marine and freshwater crustaceans (a class of organism noted for their crustlike shell that they are covered with) with a shrimp-like body enclosed in two shells which open and shut
peat - partially converted carbon residue soaked with water, usually formed by decaying plants
restore - to bring back to its former state; to bring back from a state of ruin, decay, disease, or the like; to repair; to renew; to recover
runoff - water that does not get soaked into the ground when it rains, which pools and eventually 'runs' into other bodies of water
species - a permanent group of existing organisms associated with one another according to attributes, or characteristics
threatened - likely in the near future to become endangered
urban - of or belonging to a city or town
