Alan D. Stiles, MD

Dr. Stiles is the principal investigator of the UNC CERTs, which focuses on pediatric therapeutics. He has served as Brewer Distinguished Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Physician-in-Chief for the North Carolina Children's Hospital, a part of the UNC Health Care System, since 2000. Dr. Stiles completed his undergraduate education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . He graduated from the UNC School of Medicine in 1978. Dr. Stiles completed a residency in Pediatrics at the North Carolina Memorial Hospital and served as Chief Resident of Pediatrics in 1981. Following residency, Dr. Stiles was a fellow in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the Joint Program in Neonatology at Harvard School of Medicine. In 1986, Dr. Stiles was appointed to the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina . His research interests have focused on cellular mechanisms of fetal lung growth and development and on children's health care delivery and quality improvement. He has served on numerous committees and boards at the local, state, and national level related to lung research and child health issues. He also serves as an ad hoc consultant to the FDA, NIH, and AHRQ for children's health care issues; and provides input to the Institute of Medicine in areas of health care quality improvement, medical device use and monitoring, and therapeutics related to children. He is on the Board of Directors of the Community Care of North Carolina, the case management and managed care Medicaid plan for the state, and is a consultant to the Physicians Advisory Group for North Carolina Medicaid.
