I AM VERY PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THE SELECTION OF MS. LENA M. GAVELLO, CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER (CDC) EDUCATION SPECIALIST, TRACEN PETALUMA, AS RECIPIENT OF THE 2007 CIVILIAN EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR (CEOY) AWARD, AND MS. PEGGY PIES, LODGE/HOST MANAGER, ISC KODIAK, AK, AS THE RECIPIENT OF THE 2007 NON-APPROPRIATED FUND EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR (NAF EOY) AWARD. 2. MS. GAVELLOS OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES DURING THE EXTENDED ABSENCE OF THE CDC DIRECTOR WAS TRULY REMARKABLE. LENA STEPPED IN AS CDC DIRECTOR AND PERFORMED RESPONSIBILITIES WELL ABOVE HER PAY GRADE WHILE STILL PERFORMING ALL OF HER OWN JOB RESPONSIBILITIES IN AN OUTSTANDING MANNER. 3. MS. GAVELLOS MULTITUDE OF TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDED 1) HIRING THE CDC SUMMER STAFF, 2) WRITING AN INTRODUCTORY BRIEF OF THE CDC FOR A NEW INCOMING EXECUTIVE OFFICER, 3) CANCELLING AND RESCHEDULING SPECIAL NEEDS INTERVENTIONS, 4) SUBMITTING MONTHLY ENROLLMENT REPORTS AND PERSONNEL ROSTERS, AND 5) PROVIDING OVERSIGHT AND GUIDANCE FOR THE NEW STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES DRAFT, CALIFORNIA CHILD FOOD PROGRAM (CACFP) AND THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF THE EDUCATION FOR YOUNG CHILDREN (NAEYC) COMPLIANCE. 4. MS. GAVELLO DEMONSTRATED STRONG LEADERSHIP SKILLS IN DIRECTING HER STAFF AND DEMONSTRATED THE EPITOME OF HONOR, RESPECT, AND DEVOTION TO DUTY, WHILE IMMERSING HERSELF IN THE CDC OPERATIONS TO ENSURE THAT THE MISSION OF SERVING CHILDREN AND PARENTS WAS NOT DISRUPTED. HER OUTSTANDING AND INCREDIBLE SERVICE MOVED THE CDC STAFF TO CONTINUE IN A SPIRIT OF TEAMWORK AND DEDICATION TO DUTY. 5. AS THE RECIPIENT OF THE 2007 NON-APPROPRIATED FUND EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR(NAF EOY), MS. PIES IS AN OUTSTANDING HOTEL MANAGER WHOSE SUPERIOR LEADERSHIP ABILITIES AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL RESULTED IN THE GUEST HOUSE BECOMING THE MOST LUCRATIVE CATEGORY C FACILITY IN ISC KODIAKS MWR PROGRAM. THE GUEST HOUSE GROSSED 529K IN SALES FOR NAF IN FY07, AND 7610 UNITS WERE RENTED. 6. MS. PIES IS ALWAYS LOOKING FOR WAYS TO IMPROVE THE HOTEL EXPERIENCE FOR CUSTOMERS. THIS YEAR SHE REINVESTED APPROXIMATELY 34K IN CAPITAL FOR NEW CARPETS AND VINYL ON THE 2ND AND 3RD FLOOR HALLWAYS, AND COMMUNITY DINING AREAS, AND 24K FOR NEW QUILTS THAT INITIATED AN ALASKAN THEME CHANGE. CURRENT PLANS ARE TO COMPLETE RENOVATIONS OVER THE NEXT THREE YEARS. IN ADDITION, SHE UPGRADED THE WIRELESS NETWORK PROVIDING MORE EFFICIENT CONNECTIVITY FOR GUESTS. EVEN WITH THESE EXPENSES, THE GUEST HOUSE ACHIEVED A NET WORTH OF APPROXIMATELY 256K FOR FY07. MS. PIES ACHIEVED THE HIGHEST STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE BY TAKING PRIDE IN HER FACILITY AND ENSURING EVERY SINGLE ROOM WAS COMFORTABLE, SPOTLESS, AND SAFE. SHE EXERTED TREMENDOUS EFFORT TO DECORATE THE LOBBY FOR VARIOUS CELEBRATIONS, MAKING IT A WARM AND INVITING PLACE TO STAY. 7. MS. PIES IS AN EXCELLENT LEADER AND MENTOR WHOSE DEDICATION AND WORK ETHIC REFLECT THE COAST GUARD CORE VALUES OF HONOR, RESPECT, AND DEVOTION TO DUTY. BECAUSE OF HER DRIVE AND ENTHUSIASM, THE FACILITIES SHE MANAGES ALWAYS RUN SMOOTHLY AND ERROR-FREE. MS. PIES IS AN INVALUABLE ASSET TO THE ISC KODIAK, MWR BRANCH TEAM. 8.
