National Endowment for the Arts Announces Retirement of Arts Education Partnership Director Dick DeasyEmbargoed for release
Washington, D.C. -- The National Endowment for the Arts announces the retirement of Richard J. Deasy, Director of the Arts Education Partnership (AEP). For more than a decade, Deasy has skillfully led this coalition, co-founded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the U.S. Department of Education, the Council for Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA). Deasy will step down in June 2008. "Dick Deasy has shown exceptional leadership in the field of arts education," said NEA Education Director, Dr. Sarah Cunningham. "Through this crucial forum, he has enabled a range of organizations to strengthen and deepen the role of arts education throughout the nation." During Deasy's tenure, AEP has published influential research on arts education in the United States. He commissioned and edited AEP's acclaimed report, Critical Links: Learning in the Arts and Student Academic and Social Development, and most recently commissioned the research and co-authored the resulting book Third Space: When Learning Matters, a study of the positive impact of arts education in underserved schools. Mr. Deasy has been a senior state education official in Maryland and Pennsylvania, president and CEO of the National Council for International Visitors, and a prize-winning journalist covering politics and government at the state and local levels. He was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting on housing and urban affairs in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Reflecting on his years of service, Mr. Deasy noted "It's been a great privilege and honor for me to serve the extraordinary coalition of organizations of the Arts Education Partnership over these years. We have modeled the strength and value of partnership as key to advancing arts education in America. I have no doubt that the bonds that have been forged among us will lead to an even greater success in the years ahead." Founded in 1995, the Arts Education Partnership (AEP) is a national coalition of more than 100 arts, education, business, philanthropic and government organizations that demonstrate and promote the essential role of the arts in the learning and development of every child and in the improvement of America's schools.
