The Albuquerque Police Department
is committed to safeguarding our neighborhoods. A safe
and livable neighborhood with pleasant conditions for
residents, cyclists, motorists, and pedestrians is an
important part of a good quality of life. The
Albuquerque Police Department responds to numerous
traffic complaints each month. The most common concerns
expressed are speeding vehicles and heavy traffic. These
disturbances can lead to excessive traffic noise,
difficulties for pedestrians and bicyclists and the
perception that our streets are not safe.
In an effort to bring speed
awareness up the Albuquerque Police Department currently
has speed monitoring awareness radar trailers available
for use in your neighborhood! Speed trailers are speed
detection devices that display the traveling speed of an
oncoming vehicle as it passes the trailer. This program
operates under the assumption that many drivers do not
speed intentionally and will respond to a visual
reminder of excessive speed. The speed monitoring
awareness radar trailer redirects the driver’s attention
to the task of driving and reminds the motorist to ease
up on the gas petal. As speed awareness goes up,
motorists slow down, making our neighborhoods safer.
Finding an appropriate location to
set up the trailer is not always easy. In order to
be effective the trailer must be set up in a safe
location that allows the radar unit to have a clear path
to approaching vehicles. Since the speed monitoring
awareness radar trailers are needed throughout the city
all requests will be reviewed for validity, feasibility
and necessity in accordance with the Albuquerque Police
Department guidelines. Demand may vary, but
all requests will be handled as quickly as possible.
