Grinnell Glacier from trail 1900 - 1998

Grinnell Glacier taken from the Grinnell Glacier trail, Glacier National Park.

Grinnell Glacier’s diminished size is evident in this pair of photos taken 98 years apart. In the early 1900s Grinnell Glacier receded into two ice masses. The portion in the upper right of the 1998 photo is referred to as The Salamader. Grinnell Glacier itself is not visible from this viewpoint in 1998. Glacier National Park’s smallest glacier, Gem Glacier, appears in the upper left of both photos and does not appear to have changed significantly.
