D. Craig Welling

Deputy Assistant Secretary for Corporate Business Operations

Craig WellingCraig Welling assumed duties as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Corporate Business Operations in the Office of Nuclear Energy on 20 August 2007.

Mr. Welling graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. He served over 28 years on active duty retiring in 2000 with the rank of Captain, United States Navy.

Captain Welling served in various submarine sea tour positions including those of Executive Officer of USS ARCHERFISH, Commanding Officer of USS ALEXANDER HAMILTON and in Submarine Major Command as Commanding Officer of the Trident nuclear submarine, USS OHIO.

His shore assignments included service as Instructor at the Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit in New York, Project Officer on the Submarine Force Atlantic Staff, Deputy Commander for Training and Readiness at Submarine Development Squadron Twelve, Submarine Force Pacific Representative at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Chief of Staff to the Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Defense Programs, and Deputy Director of the Nuclear Command and Control System Support Staff.

After leaving the Navy Mr. Welling served in senior management positions at two commercial nuclear sites and as a Program Manager with Systems Planning and Analysis, Inc. in support of the Department of Homeland Security.

His awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal (two awards), Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal (four awards) in addition to several other personal and unit awards.

Mr. Welling holds a Masters in Business Administration from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Masters in National Security Policy from the National War College. He is also a graduate of the Senior Officials in National Security executive program presented jointly by Johns Hopkins University and Syracuse University. He and his wife Carter reside in Virginia and have three children.
