John D. Shages

Deputy Assistant Secretary for Petroleum Reserves

Photo: John ShagesJohn Shages is the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Petroleum Reserves.  He directs activities of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve and the Naval Petroleum and Oil Shale Reserves in California.  He has worked on the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and Naval Petroleum and Oil Shale Reserve programs since 1981, and has been in the Department of Energy and predecessor organizations since 1974.  Prior to the Energy Department he worked as a regulatory economist at the Civil Aeronautics Board. 

He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Bates College in Maine and a Master of Science degree in Economics of Public Policy from University College, University of London, England.
