Robin Staffin
Associate Director, High Energy Physics
Dr. Robin Staffin is Associate Director of Science in DOE, where he serves as director of the Office of High Energy Physics. In this capacity, he oversees federally sponsored research that seeks to understand matter in terms of their smallest constituents and at their highest energies. This research is currently being conducted at five national laboratories and at over 100(?) universities funded through the Department of Energy, and comprises most of the funded research in the US in high energy physics.
Dr. Staffin previously served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Research and Development at DOE's Office of Defense Programs, and later as the Secretary of Energy’s Senior Policy Advisor for Science and Technology. Previous to that, he served at the Pentagon as Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Policy.
Dr. Staffin received his bachelors degree in physics at MIT and his doctorate in theoretical particle physics at Stanford University.
Previous to government service, Dr. Staffin was senior physicist at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory in California.
