Marilyn Lee has been active in her community since she and her family settled in Mililani in 1981. Her four children attended Mililani public schools, graduated from college, and are pursuing their chosen careers. She served as President of the PTSA, helped establish the first School Community Based Management (SCBM) at Mililani High School and served as a member of the Mililani Waena Elementary School School Community Council (SSC). Marilyn worked as a registered nurse at Wahiawa General Hospital for 24 years.

Marilyn served on the Mililani Neighborhood Board #25 for 10 years, the last four as Chair. Community activities include the Lions, Friends of the Mililani Library, and American Cancer Society. She is the co-founder and President of the Central Oahu Caregivers Support Group, President of the Mililani Teen Support Organization, and Chair of the Legislative Action Committee of the Mililani Town Anti-Drug Committee, Mililani Drug Free.

In 1996, Marilyn was elected to the House of Representatives. She served as Vice Chair of the Committee on Consumer Protection and Commerce. In 2002, her colleagues elected her Majority Floor Leader where she served for four years and also sat on the Judiciary and Consumer Protection Committees. She is currently the Vice-Chair of the Finance Committee, a member of the Transportation, Labor and Public Safety Committees and a Majority Whip. She is a member of the Policy Committee of the Oahu Metropolitan Planning Organization, co-chair of the Women's Legislative Caucus and co-chair of the Joint Legislative Committee on Family Caregiving.

On the national scene, Marilyn was named Flemming Fellow in 1999 and participated in the US/Japan Exchange on Women in Public Policy in 2000. She was a member of the first Foreign Policy Institute sponsored by the Center for Women Policy Studies in 2001. In 2003, she was selected as an Eleanor Roosevelt Fellow, traveling to China to study environmental issues. In 2006 she was selected as one of 14 international women legislators to participate in the GlobalPOWER initiative of the Center for Women Policy Studies.
