  Photograph of Mark Palmer   Mark Palmer leads the Computer Integrated Building Processes Group at the Building and Fire Research Laboratory (BFRL) of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Mr. Palmer conducts research on methods and metrics for the integration of information, communication and automation technologies and work process optimization to improve engineering, manufacturing and construction. Mr. Palmer is active in national and international standards development activities and numerous industry organizations. This has included leading collaborative projects on information modeling, ontology alignment, systems interoperability and cross-industry, information standards.

Mr. Palmer is the manager of the BFRL Construction Integration and Automation Technology (CONSIAT) Program and leads a number of projects, including the Virtual Project Data Integration Testbed, eBusiness Standards Convergence and the FIATECH Automating Equipment Information Exchange (AEX) project. As a technical advisor to the GSA Office of Governmentwide Policy, he chairs the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to UN/CEFACT (United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business), and he is a Vice Chair for UN/CEFACT. He is working with ANSI and a number of international standards development organizations to establish a prototype Federated Registry of eBusiness Capabilities, Standards and Standards Projects.

Prior to joining NIST, Mr. Palmer spent 14 years in the engineering and construction of commercial, industrial and residential facilities. He received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Oregon. His Master of Science degree is from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he specialized in the integration of CAD/CAE systems, knowledge systems, and quality management principles.
