Dr. Manzello joined NIST in January, 2001 as a Mechanical Engineer in the Fire Metrology Group within the Building and Fire Research Laboratory (BFRL) at NIST. Dr. Manzello’s research is currently focused on understanding the ignition of structures due to firebrand attack in wildland-urban interface (WUI) fires, providing the technical basis for an accurate measurement methodology to investigate the response of structural elements under real fire exposures and to collect data necessary to guide and validate computational models to predict failure, understanding soot formation in combustion using a well stirred reactor coupled to a plug flow reactor, and developing new fire retardant materials using combustion synthesized nano-structures. Dr. Manzello has authored 87 publications (33 archival journal publications and 54 conference publications) in combustion and fire science. 5 Recent Publications: S.L. Manzello, T.G. Cleary, J.R. Shields, A. Maranghides, W. Mell, and J.C. Yang, Experimental Investigation of Firebrands: Generation and Ignition of Fuel Beds, Fire Safety Journal, in press, 2007. S.L. Manzello, A.
