Objective of Project:

The objective of this RFA is to bring the advantages of state-of-the-art cancer prevention and control and treatment research to minority individuals in their own communities by having practicing physicians participate in NCI-approved cancer prevention and control and treatment clinical trials.

Description of Project:

The National Cancer Institute (NCI), has established the Minority-Based Community Clinical Oncology Program (Minority-Based CCOP) that is aimed at domestic institutions with 40 percent or more of new cancer patients from minority populations. This RFA seeks to strengthen the Minority-Based CCOP by: 1) continuing the program as a vehicle for supporting participation of minority individuals in cancer prevention and control and treatment clinical trials through research bases (NCI Cooperative Groups and Cancer Centers); 2) bring the advantages of state-of-the-art cancer prevention and control and treatment research to minority individuals in their own communities; 3) increase the involvement of primary health care providers and other specialists in the cancer prevention and control research effort; 4) establish an operational base for extending cancer prevention and control and reducing cancer incidence, morbidity, and mortality in minority populations; and 5) evaluating on a continuing basis Minority-Based CCOP performance and its impact in the community in reducing cancer health disparities. Participating community programs (Minority-Based CCOPs) will be required to enter participants onto NCI-approved cancer prevention and control and treatment clinical trials through the research base(s) with which each Minority-Based CCOP is affiliated. The NCI intends to commit approximately $2.4 million in total costs in FY 2008 to fund approximately 5 new and/or competing continuation MBCCOP applications.
