Objective of Project:

This solicitation is part of an overall effort by NIH to establish an Exposure Biology Program as part of a larger "Gene and Environment" Initiative, publicly announced in February 2006. Specifically, this RFA is designed to stimulate research to develop new or refine existing technologies, such as sensors, scanning or other measurement devices, imaging techniques, wireless technologies, and bioinformatics to diet and physical activity assessment approaches. The development of objective recovery biomarkers that reflect a wide array of short- or long-term nutrient or food intakes is also encouraged. It is anticipated that any devices or measures developed through this RFA would be available for application in large-scale population studies at the end of the funding period and that the development would include confirmatory validation information. NCI and NHLBI commit $16,000,000 (total costs) for the entire four-year funding period.
