2008 Performance Metrics

Each year, the ARM Program must submit to DOE an overall performance measure related to scientific achievement. The overall performance measure includes specific metrics for reporting progress each quarter. This reporting process includes support documentation (usually a report or data file) appropriate for the metric.

Overall Performance Measures

This year, ARM will submit a series of metrics jointly with the Climate Change Prediction Program (CCPP). The two programs will report here on their separate activities. For CCPP, the metrics will deal with a decade-long control simulation using a geodesic grid-coupled climate model. For ARM, the metrics will deal with observations associated with the 2006 deployment of the ARM Mobile Facility (AMF) to Niamey, Niger.

1st Quarter Metric—Completed

Describe algorithms for climate data products and initial testing of geodesic coupled model.

Product Definition/Description – Initial formulation of an algorithm to produce and make available, new continuous time series of retrieved cloud, aerosol, and dust properties, based on results from the ARM Mobile Facility deployment in Niger, Africa. Initial testing in preparation for year-long control simulation using geodesic grid-coupled climate model at a resolution approximately 250 km.

Product Documentation/Deliverables - The first quarter milestone was the initial formulation of the algorithm to produce and make available new continuous time series of retrieved cloud, aerosol, and dust properties based on results from the ARM Mobile Facility deployment in Niger, Africa. The first quarter milestone has been achieved and progress is reported in Atmospheric Properties from the 2006 Niamey Deployment and Climate Simulation with a Geodesic Grid Coupled Climate Model.

2nd Quarter Metric—Completed

Report Niamey cloud frequency observations and results from year-long control simulation.

Product Definition/Description – Produce and make available, new continuous time series of cloud frequency, based on results from the ARM Mobile Facility deployment in Niger, Africa, and report on year-long control simulation using geodesic grid-coupled climate model at a resolution approximately 250 km. The simulation will be compared with observations.

Product Documentation/Deliverables - The second quarter milestone was achieved and progress is reported in Atmospheric Properties from the 2006 Niamey Deployment and Climate Simulation with a Geodesic Grid Coupled Climate Model. A single file was developed that contains hourly cloud occurrence frequency for the entire Niamey deployment of the ARM Mobile Facility in 2006. The data and documentation are available from the ARM Climate Research Facility Archive.

3rd Quarter Metric—Completed

Report Niamey aerosol observations and results from multi-year control simulation.

Product Definition/Description – Produce and make available, new continuous time series of aerosol total column depth, based on results from the ARM Mobile Facility deployment in Niger, Africa, and report on several years control simulation using geodesic grid-coupled climate model at a resolution approximately 250 km. The simulation will be compared with observations.

Product Documentation/Deliverables – The third quarter milestone was met and progress has been reported in Atmospheric Properties from the 2006 Niamey Deployment and Climate Simulation with a Geodesic Grid Coupled Climate Model. Two types of data files have been provided for the atmospheric properties from the 2006 Niamey deployment: a detailed file and a summary file containing daily averages. The detailed data file contains the aerosol optical depths for each cloud-screened MFRSR sample at wavelengths of 415 nm, 500 nm, 615 nm, 673 nm, and 870 nm, and an Angstrom exponent derived from the 500 nm and 870 nm channels. The detailed file also includes the multiplicative forward scattering corrections a(λ) that were applied to yield these final aerosol optical depth values. The summary file contains daily averaged aerosol optical depths for the same five wavelengths and a daily averaged Angstrom exponent. The data and documentation are available from the ARM Climate Research Facility Archive.

4th Quarter Metric

Report Niamey dust observations and results from decade-long control simulation.

Product Definition/Description – Produce new continuous time series of retrieved dust properties, based on results from the ARM Mobile Facility deployment in Niger, Africa, and report results of decade-long control simulation using geodesic grid-coupled climate model at a resolution approximately 250 km. The simulation will be compared with observations.

Product Documentation/Deliverables – Will be provided at the end of quarter.
