Chair And Vice Chair Elected

Bernalillo County Commission Chairman Alan B. Armijo has been unanimously re-elected to serve a sixth, one year term as chairman of the commission. The motion was passed during the commission’s regularly scheduled monthly meeting on January 8.
 
During his time on the board Commissioner Armijo has been a driving force behind many of the county’s economic development, public safety and fiscal management programs. For example, under his guidance, the County has issued over $160 million dollars in revenue bonds and waived a large number of impact fees which has helped companies expand facilities and create thousands of new jobs, resulting in additional gross receipts tax revenue. He has also provided direction during the transition to the County of the full operation of the Metropolitan Detention Center, has increased fire protection throughout the unincorporated areas of the county and worked closely with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office to increase salaries to improve deputy recruitment and retention.
 
Commissioner Armijo, a highly respected educator, worked for Albuquerque Public Schools for over 30 years, is currently APS’ Governmental Liaison and has over twenty-three years experience as a teacher and coach. He holds Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in education from the University of New Mexico and a certificate from the Harvard John F. Kennedy School of Government Program.
 
Tthe County Commission also unanimously elected Deanna A. Archuleta as its vice-chair. Commissioner Archuleta, has represented the County’s third district for the past three years, has been actively involved in the community and focused her efforts on healthcare, substance abuse treatment, the UNM Hospital and economic and structural revitalization in existing neighborhoods. She has been instrumental in legislative funding and direction for the Metropolitan Assessment and Treatment Services Center (MATS), the acquisition and renovation of the historic Hiland Theater and working with new businesses to re-locate or establish their operations in Bernalillo County. She is currently serving as Chair of the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Government Commission, Chair of the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority and is a member of the Metropolitan Detention Center Operation Subcommittee, the Legislative Committee, the Regional Juvenile Detention Committee and the Board of Finance. 
A native New Mexican, Commissioner Archuleta received her Master’s from the University of New Mexico and is currently finishing her Doctoral degree.
