A Summer Internship Program Providing Energy Opportunities for Minority Students
The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy is dedicated to supporting minority students who are studying in academic disciplines that are related to the Fossil Energy mission. Through its Headquarters and field offices, the Fossil Energy Office offers summer internship opportunities to students to enhance their knowledge and gain hands-on experience and encourages them to consider future employment with the Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy.
Charter
The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship Program (MLEF) is a ten-week summer internship program dedicated to recruiting women and under-represented minorities who are matriculating in math, science, and engineering from an accredited college or university.
The goals of MLEF are to:
-
Promote careers in the Fossil Energy Program
-
Promote engineering, science and technology, particularly in fossil fuel research & development
Preserving the Memory of Mickey Leland
On August 8, 2000, then-Energy Secretary Bill Richardson renamed the Office of Fossil Energy's Minority Education Intiative the Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship. The more than 100 members of the 2000 class became the first "Mickey Leland Energy Fellows."
The Secretary stated that the ceremony to honor the late Congressman from Houston who died on August 7, 1989, in a plane crash will be a way to "remember a great American who dedicated his life to expanding human potential."
The Secretary also said that he "could find no better way to honor his memory than to endow his name on a program that will elevate the opportunities for future generations of minority students."
