I am a second semester senior, majoring in biology at Delaware State University. I, being a cancer survivor myself, am specifically interested in the areas of oncology and pharmacology. My first research experience began in the summer of 2000 in the area of cancer. This was under the guidance of Dr. Miriam L. Wahl, Ph.D., at the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This opportunity helped spark my curiosity and motivation in pursuing a rigorous program such as an M.D./Ph.D. It also stimulated me to take advantage of the opportunities available to me in other areas and places of research development. This determination led me to the UGSP.

I am currently working at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke in the Viral Immunology Section. This laboratory, headed by Steven Jacobson, Ph.D., conducts clinical research on the Human T-cell Lymphotrophic Virus 1 (HTLV-1) and the Human Herpes Virus 6 (HHV-6) and their association in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS). My specific research project is to concentrate on HHV-6 in order to see if there is a relationship between it and MS.

This research is relevant to so many people who suffer from MS, and I am happy to be a part of it. The opportunities that are offered at the NIH are endless, and I am extremely honored to be a UGSP Scholar. There need to be more programs like the UGSP to prepare students for research.
