The National Sustainable Design Expo featuring EPA's P3 (People, Prosperity and the Planet) competition and awards support teams of college and university students who compete to design and build sustainable technologies. In addition to the P3 team projects, government, nonprofit, and for-profit organizations exhibit their sustainable technologies, designs, and ideas. The National Sustainable Design Expo and P3 event on the National Mall are open to the general public.

The first P3 competition took place in May 2005 when college and university teams from around the country joined our partners in Washington, DC, at an event on the National Mall. All projects are judged by the National Academy of Engineering during the two-day event on the Mall. The EPA then chooses and announces the P3 Award winners at a ceremony at the National Academies Building. The awards ceremony is also open to media.

The P3 competition and awards are sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in partnership with 42 nonprofit and industry organizations.

This year, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers - Youth Council on Sustainable Science and Technology (YCOSST), and the Green Building Initiativeā„¢ (GBI) presented additional awards (see additional awards for more detail). Other additional awards may be added prior to the Expo. AAAS conducted the judging for the P3 award.

Prior additional award presentors are available in the Media Information Archive.

2008 P3 Award winners photos and video are available on the P3 Multimedia page.
