On Friday, June 24, 2005, fires spread in the desert Southwest. The fires, which have been marked in red, are sending dense plumes of smoke into the atmosphere. Unusually thick vegetation, a result of a wet winter, is fueling the fires, which are burning in California, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image.
