I am originally from Kansas where I attended the University of Kansas in Lawrence my freshman year. My interest in molecular virology, however, brought me to the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where I graduated from this spring with majors in molecular biology and genetics. During my senior year I worked in the SIV/HIV laboratory of Dr. David Watkins.

While at the University of Wisconsin at Madison I had more opportunities than I thought possible. These opportunities may not have been realized without the help of the UGSP.

I am now in my third summer with the UGSP, and I am training with Dr. Susan Moir in the Laboratory of Immunoregulation of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. This laboratory conducts clinical and basic research on HIV and AIDS. We are currently studying B-cell perturbations previously observed in patients with HIV. My aspect of the project aims to understand the extent to which T-cell interactions from HIV infected patients influences B-cell dysfunction. These findings will lead to a greater understanding of important immune system interactions, ultimately providing a foundation for therapeutic efforts.

The support of the students, faculty, and mentors of the UGSP has been a tremendous help to me on the path to achieving my long-term goal of continued research in HIV/AIDS and earning an M.D./Ph.D.
