EVANS OF OTTUMWA WINS MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE BOWL

LeMars second, Ogden Wins Fuel-cell Car Competition

AMES, Iowa – Evans Middle School of Ottumwa edged out LeMars 34-26 to win the 2008 Ames Laboratory/Iowa State University Middle School Science Bowl here on Saturday, April 19. Council Bluffs St. Albert was third and Home Schools of Eastern Iowa was fourth in the 16-team science and math quiz bowl competition.

Evans’ victory means the school will be participating in the National Science Bowl for the second time in three years. Evans won the Ames Lab/ISU Regional in 2006 and went on to finish fourth out of the 25 teams competing in the National Science Bowl event that year. This year’s team of Lily Elbaum, Jianwa Bennett, Sarah Beadle, Jacob Huebener, and Tivy Wixom will travel to Golden, Colo., June 19-22 for the National Science Bowl, sponsored by the United States Department of Energy. Both Evans’ teams were coached by Sue Happel.

Ogden put on a strong finish to beat South Hamilton in the hydrogen fuel-cell car race portion of the competition on Friday, April 18. Students raced model fuel-cell cars they designed and built from a basic kit.

Teams competing in the 2008 Ames Laboratory/ISU Regional Science Bowl were:
