AMES LABORATORY’S AKINC ELECTED ASM FELLOW
AMES, Iowa – Mufit Akinc, an associate scientist at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory, has been elected a Fellow of ASM International, a society for materials scientists and engineers.
Akinc, who is also an Iowa State University professor of materials science and engineering, was honored for his “contributions to the science and technology of ceramics and alloy powders and for leadership in materials education.” Akinc is one of 19 ASM Fellows elected in 2008.
The Fellow designation was established by ASM International to provide recognition to members for their distinguished contributions to the materials science and engineering field. Fellows are considered technical and professional leaders who serve as advisors to the society, and they are selected by their peers in the organization.
Akinc adds the ASM Fellow to his growing list of awards and achievements. Akinc was named a member of the European Academy of Science in 2003, and he was chair of ISU’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering from 1995-2006. |

In 2006, Akinc received the American Ceramic Society’s Ross Coffin Purdy Award for making the most valuable contribution to ceramic technical literature during that calendar year. He was also named a Fellow of ACerS in 1996 and served on the ACerS President’s Faculty Advisory Board in 1997. Earlier this year, Akinc was selected as Fulbright scholar to Turkey, where he will teach a graduate course at Koc University, deliver seminars and collaborate with Turkish scientists. In October, Akinc will join the ASM Board of Trustees.
Akinc earned his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, and he earned a doctorate degree from ISU. Before coming to Ames Laboratory and ISU, he was an assistant professor at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan., and METU in Turkey.
Akinc’s current research interests are the processing of structural and functional materials used in energy generation, storage and transformation. In particular, he investigates the synthesis, processing and characterization of novel materials for high-temperature structural applications. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science, Basic Energy Sciences, and Office of Fossil Energy fund Akinc’s work.
Ames Laboratory is a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science laboratory operated for the DOE by Iowa State University. The Lab conducts research into various areas of national concern, including the synthesis and study of new materials, energy resources, high-speed computer design, and environmental cleanup and restoration .
