Science Bowl Volunteerism Earns ISU Student $1,500

Ashley Grimes

Her support of the Ames Laboratory/Iowa State University Science Bowls has earned Ashley Grimes, a senior majoring in biology, an ISU Community Service Scholarship in the amount of $1,500.  Scholarship recipients are selected based on community service performed on campus, in the city of Ames, or in Story County, Iowa.
Ashley’s role as a judge for both the high school and middle school competitions on Jan. 27 and April 14, respectively, required considerable preparation on her part.  Among other tasks, she had to independently review over 100 questions to make sure she was prepared to fairly judge any challenges from the student teams.  Ashley’s volunteer efforts for Science Bowl highlight her desire to help youngsters who excel in math and science experience an outstanding event in which their talents can shine.

Noting that her Science Bowl volunteer work also benefited her, Ashley said, “When I graduate, I’ll be teaching biology to students in the upper grades, but I haven’t had much opportunity to interact with young people in that age range.  Science Bowl provided me with that valuable experience, and it was great fun.”
