COMMERCE SECRETARY BROWN AND ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM PARTNERS TO DISCUSS NEW STUDY OF ATP IMPACTS ON FEBRUARY 12

Event: Commerce Secretary Ronald H. Brown will host a media briefing to announce results of the most recent study of near-term impacts of the Commerce Department's Advanced Technology Program. The briefing will include presentations by ATP private-sector partners on specific projects. A question-and-answer session will follow.
Date: Monday, Feb. 12, 1996 10 a.m.
Place: Room 4830, Department of Commerce (Herbert C. Hoover Bldg.) 14th St. and Constitution Ave., Washington, D.C.
Phone Link: For out-of-towners unable to attend the event, a toll-free, two-way telephone hook-up to the media briefing will be offered.

Reporters planning to attend by phone must register by 12 noon Eastern time on Friday, Feb. 9, with the contact listed above.

The 800 number and access code for joining the briefing will be provided upon registration.

Notes: Established in 1990 as an experimental program to foster the rapid development of promising new technologies that would otherwise be ignored or unfunded because they involve high-risk, difficult R&D tasks, the ATP in recent years has become a key mechanism for creating industry-government partnerships to overcome such barriers. The new study, conducted by a private research firm for the ATP's economic evaluation program, is the most detailed evaluation yet of the ATP's near term impact on U.S. industry and private-sector R&D. It documents progress toward meeting ATP's goals of enabling the development of high-risk technologies, fostering new cooperative research ventures and improving the competitive position of U.S. industry.
