QUESTION

Why does the version of OPNET Modeler and NETWARS have to be compatible releases (i.e. 5-1 and 11.0 or 4-2 and 10.5 or even 4-2 and 11.0) since you don't need Modeler to run NETWARS?

ANSWER

1. Model development: If the customer is building node models that he wants to run using NETWARS (for instance, a new Promina-like device), Modeler must use the same version that NETWARS is based on. If Modeler is a later version, the node model will not be recognized by NETWARS; if Modeler is an older version, NETWARS will choke when it tries to update the model from the older version to the newer version.

2. Licensing: If the customer uses a Modeler installation to serve licenses, then that version should be at least as recent as the NETWARS version. The license server doles out licenses to older clients, but not newer ones. So, if the Modeler version is 10.0 and the customer is using NETWARS 2004-2 or later (based on 10.5 or 11.0), NETWARS will not be able to get a license.

If neither is an issue, then the Modeler version does not affect NETWARS.
