Spotlight: September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

Approximately 1 in every 57 women in the United States will develop ovarian cancer, and the disease causes more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system. The sooner ovarian cancer is found and treated, the better a woman's chance for recovery. But ovarian cancer is hard to detect early; many women have no symptoms or just mild symptoms until the disease is in an advanced stage.
3-year average age-adjusted ovarian cancer deaths, by race and female population distribution by race
Early indicators of the disease include pelvic or abdominal pain, bloating, trouble eating or feeling full quickly, and urinary symptoms.

Quick Health Data Online provides several types of data related to ovarian cancer. The site includes information on:

  • Ovarian cancer diagnoses,
  • Ovarian cancer deaths,
  • Single year and three year averages,
  • Crude and age adjusted rates.

The system can generate maps as well as charts and tables to present data such as the three-year age adjusted ovarian cancer death rate by race and DHHS region. Additional Chart features in the system can present data in horizontal or vertical bar charts, showing trend lines, or in pie charts such as these, which show the distribution of ovarian cancer deaths and the female population, by race.
