USDA PROPOSES TO ALLOW THE IMPORTATION OF SWEET ORANGES AND GRAPEFRUITS FROM CHILE

August 27, 2008

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is proposing to amend the fruits and vegetables regulations to allow the importation, under certain conditions, of sweet oranges and grapefruit from Chile into the continental United States.  Based on the evidence in a recent pest risk analysis, we believe these articles can be safely imported from all provinces of Chile, provided certain conditions are met.  This action would provide for the importation of sweet oranges and grapefruit from Chile into the continental United States while continuing to protect the United States against the introduction of plant pests.

Notice of this proposal is scheduled for publication in the Aug. 28 Federal Register.

Consideration will be given to comments received on or before Oct. 27.  You may submit comments by either of the following methods:

  • Federal eRulemaking Portal:  Go to

http://www.regulations.gov/fdmspublic/component/main?main=DocketDetail&d=APHIS- 2007-0115.

  • Postal Mail/Commercial Delivery:  Please send two copies of your comment to Docket No. APHIS-2007-0115, Regulatory Analysis and Development, PPD, APHIS, Station 3A-03.8, 4700 River Road Unit 118, Riverdale, MD 20737-1238.  Please state that your comment refers to Docket No. APHIS-2007-0115.
