The Partnerships '96 Conference was held May 12-14, 1996, in Rancho Mirage, California. It was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Annenberg Center for Health Sciences, IEEE-USA, and other agencies and organizations. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation provided a grant to support wide dissemination of information developed from the conference, including online dissemination.
Announcements
The next conference, 1997 Partnerships for
Networked Consumer Health Information, will be held April 14-16, 1997 at the
Georgetown University Conference Center. It will be held in conjunction with the Friends of the NLM's "HII '97" conference, which
is April 13-15.
Testimony of
Mary Jo Deering, Ph.D., Director, Health Communication and Telehealth, Office of Disease
Prevention and Health Promotion, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, on Consumer
Health Informatics.
On July 18, Secretary Shalala sent a
report to Vice President Gore on Enhanced Consumer Health Information. It outlines HHS
activities that are underway and projected, emphasizing improved coordination. It also
identifies evaluation efforts that could increase if funds are available. The report may

On July 26, the GAO presented its report
on Consumer Health Informatics to the House Subcommittee on Human Resources and
Intergovernmental Relations. It identifies cost, access, and information quality as key
issues, and also focuses on the role of the Federal government. The report may be found at
