SAMHSA Accepting Applications for FY 2008 National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative Community Treatment and Services Center Grants

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is soliciting applications for a fiscal year (FY) 2008 National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative Community Treatment and Services Center Grants. The purpose of these grants is to improve treatment and services for children and adolescents who have experienced traumatic events.  The grants fund participation in a national network of intervention developers and service providers who work collaboratively to promote effective community practices for children and adolescents who have been exposed to traumatic experiences.The national network is comprised of three types of centers:

 

1.      The National Center for Child Traumatic Stress (NCCTS) is the coordinating center for the network and coordinates collaborative network activities, oversees resource development and dissemination, and coordinates national education and training efforts;

 

2.   The Treatment and Service Adaptation (TSA) Centers provide national expertise on specific types of traumatic events, population groups and service systems, develop effective trauma interventions, and support the specialized adaptation of effective treatment and service interventions for communities across the country; and

 

3.      The Community Treatment and Services (CTS) Centers implement and evaluate effective trauma-focused and trauma-informed treatment and services in community settings and in youth-serving service systems and collaborate with other network centers on clinical issues, service approaches, policy, financing and training issues. 

 

These centers are expected to develop or enhance their expertise in several areas: performing trauma assessment, intervention, and training; conveying public and professional information; providing leadership on child/adolescent trauma issues in their communities; and serving as a resource to help their communities transform treatment and services for child trauma. Grantees are expected to collaborate intensively within the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) and to participate in the development of child traumatic stress-related products and services for nationwide dissemination.

 

SAMHSA expects that approximately $3 million in funding will be available to award 7 grants for up to 4 years. Priority in funding will be given to applicants in the GulfCoast areas of Louisiana, Florida, Texas, Alabama, and Mississippi that have provided services to individuals impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The estimated award amounts for grantees will be up to $400,000 a year. The actual award amounts may vary, depending on the availability of funds. The cooperative agreements will be awarded by SAMHSA’s Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS).

 

WHO CAN APPLY: Eligible applicants are domestic public and private nonprofit entities.  For example, State and local governments, federally recognized American Indian/Alaska Native Tribes and tribal organizations, urban Indian organizations, public or private universities and colleges; and community- and faith-based organizations; outpatient clinics; psychiatric or general hospitals; and partnerships of multiple clinical centers, programs, and/or community service providers applying as a single CTS center may apply.  The statutory authority for this program precludes grants to for-profit organizations.

APPLICATION DUE DATE: Friday, April 29, 2008.  Applications must be received by the due date and time to be considered for review.  Please review carefully Section IV-3 of the application announcement for revised Fiscal Year, 2008 submission requirements.
