Detailed Forecast Discussion |
MICHIGAN AIR QUALITY FORECAST: Monday, September 15th, 2008 through Friday, September 19th, 2008 Ozone: 8-hour Ozone concentrations will be Good through the forecast period. PM-2.5: 24-hour concentrations in the Good range could increase towards the Moderate range by the end of the week. FORECAST DISCUSSION: The remnants of two tropical systems brought plenty of rainfall across the state this past weekend. The first system moved through late Friday into Saturday and the second; which was the remnants of Hurricane Ike, moved in Sunday. Rainfall totals exceeded 10 inches in some locations. The wet conditions kept Ozone levels in the Good range. Stagnant, muggy conditions last Friday caused an increase in PM2.5 levels with Moderate readings across most of the state. Once the steadier rains moved in early Saturday levels fell back into the Good range. The tropical system continues to pull away from the state early on Monday. A few lingering showers are possible but drier air will be moving in on a northwest wind. High pressure settling in from the west will help decrease clouds and quiet weather is expected this week. A weak front is forecasted to move in from the north later on Wednesday; however, dry conditions will be in place and precipitation is not expected as it passes. High pressure is then reinforced for the end of the work week and temperatures will begin to moderate into the low to middle 70s. Air quality conditions this week are expected to remain mostly Good for both pollutants. Good Ozone levels will be attributed to cooler temperatures and a northerly wind component at upper levels. Good PM2.5 levels will last through Thursday with an increase towards the Moderate range possible Friday as surface high pressure slides east and southwest winds develop. EXTENDED FORECAST: At this time the extended forecast models are showing surface high pressure as the dominating weather feature for the coming weekend. An upper level ridge could be centered just to the east of the state causing a southwest wind flow. That coupled with light surface winds could cause PM2.5 levels to reach the Moderate range for the weekend. Forecast models will be evaluated again on Friday to determine PM2.5 levels for the weekend and early next week. Ozone conditions should remain in the Good range through the weekend.
