About Us

The White House is working with the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP), the U.S. Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Defense, Education, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, and Transportation; the U.S. General Services Administration; the National Endowment for the Humanities; Institute of Museum and Library Services; the President's Council on Environmental Quality; and the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities to implement Preserve America.

The Preserve America initiative is guided by a steering committee composed of White House and other key federal agency representatives, and co-chaired by the ACHP and the Department of the Interior. The co-chairs are John L. Nau, III, of Houston, Texas, who is chairman of the 20-member ACHP and Deputy Secretary of the Interior Patricia Lynn Scarlett.

For more information about the initiative and its programs, visit www.PreserveAmerica.gov.

The ACHP has created and maintains this Web site to assist a variety of local, state, federal, and tribal officials plan and execute successful Preserve America events throughout the country.

An independent federal agency, the ACHP promotes the preservation, enhancement, and productive use of our nation's historic resources, and advises the president and Congress on national historic preservation policy. It also provides a forum for influencing federal activities, programs, and policies that affect historic properties. In addition, the ACHP has a key role in carrying out the administration's Preserve America initiative.

The 20-member council is served by a professional staff with offices in Washington, D.C. For more information about the ACHP, contact:
