Background Information |
Sample Map
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) produces topographic maps at a variety of scales. The most detailed USGS topographic maps for the United States are at 1:24,000 or 1:25,000 scale, and the most detailed maps of Puerto Rico are at 1:20,000. These maps include natural features, such as mountains, valleys, plains, lakes, rivers, and vegetation. Contours are used to show elevation. Also included are constructed features: roads, railroads, boundaries, transmission lines, and buildings. The standard map size is 7.5 minutes of latitude by 7.5 minutes of longitude. Large-scale topographic maps are used for engineering, energy exploration, natural resource conservation, environmental management, public works design, commercial and residential planning, and outdoor activities, such as hiking, camping, and fishing. Detailed information about topographic maps can be found on the USGS Topographic Maps page, and the USGS Digital Backyard has further information on topographic maps and digital cartographic products.
The Index to Topographic Maps - 1:24,000 and Other Large Scales map layer shows the positions of the more than 54,000 large-scale topographic maps that cover the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Descriptive information includes the map name and a link to the Terraserver, where the map can be viewed.
